About Dr Dumitru
Dr Florentina Dumitru joined the Allergy Department at Guys’ and St Thomas’ NHS Trust as a consultant allergist in January 2014.
In the previous six years she had been working at Royal Brompton Hospital, in a dedicated allergy, asthma and immunotherapy clinic, led by Professor Stephen Durham, where she gained broad experience in hay fever, asthma, desensitization, and food and drug allergies.
Besides her roles in adult allergy, Dr Dumitru has been involved in a transition allergy clinic at St Thomas Hospital where the role of the allergist is instrumental in investigating and preventing life threatening allergies such as peanut allergy in children and teenagers.
Education and Training
- CCT in Allergy, 2012
- PhD, in Allergy and Asthma Mechanisms – 2011
- Training in Allergy and Clinical Immunology – 2002-2007
- MB BS (University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi), 2001 (distinction)
Special Interests
Clinical interests include immunotherapy, food allergy, drug allergy, adolescent/translational allergy.
Awards
- Clinical Research Fellowship 2008-2014, Imperial College London
- Research Fellowship 2007, Swish Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research
Research Interests
Dr Dumitru received a Clinical Research Fellowship from the Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Imperial College London to undertake clinical research between 2008 and 2014. She contributed to multiple clinical trials investigating the interaction between allergens and immune system and participated in innovative research in subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy (desensitization) in patients with hay fever and cat allergy. Furthermore, she had a key role in a clinical trial investigating the optimization of immunotherapy by using a monoclonal antibody, the results of which will be published in the future.
She completed her PhD on immunologic mechanisms in asthma and allergies whilst working in collaboration with Imperial College and Royal Brompton Hospital.
After finishing her training in allergy and clinical immunology, she received a fellowship to undertake laboratory research in molecular biology and immunology in a centre for excellence in allergy research, the Swiss Institute for Allergy and Asthma Research in Switzerland.
